Job Purpose/Objectives

  • The job holder will be responsible for the provision of legal services to the Savannah Group companies, providing sundry legal support relating to Savannah Group business objectives, as may be directed by the Head of Legal, and with the aim of mitigating legal risks and increasing the quality, consistency and effectiveness of legal advisory by the Savannah Legal Team.

 

Job & Main Specifications (Education/Knowledge, Skills, Attributes, Experience & other Required Details)

  • A qualified Nigerian lawyer with a minimum of ten (10) years of post-call experience in corporate & commercial law and litigation.
  • Demonstrable experience in the power, oil & gas and renewable energy sectors.
  • Excellent grounding in oil and gas commercial contracts, project finance, regulatory framework and corporate law, with an ability to learn new subject matter quickly.
  • Astute, commercially aware and highly motivated.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to handle high levels of responsibility with some level of independence.
  • Flexibility to take on a variety of tasks at different levels of the business.
  • Keen team player with demonstrable ability to contribute to the development of the Company.
  • Ability to work in a fast-moving environment, as the Company undergoes rapid expansion.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead negotiations and engagements with third parties and business partners operating in the oil and gas space.
  • Review and draft agreements affecting the business of the company, including those relating to financing, acquisitions and divestitures, operational and maintenance, and leasehold interests.
  • Advise on topical legal issues, including legal reforms, contractual disputes, interpretation of statutes and contractual provisions, etc.
  • Attends to and represents the Company in relation to demands and requests from regulators and law enforcement agencies.
  • Determine and review case strategy, court processes and court applications in relation to lawsuits involving the Company.
  • Undertake legal research on issues affecting the Group’s operations.
  • Manage the litigation portfolio, including liaising with external legal counsel in respect of litigation for and against the Group companies and assist with updating the litigation and dispute resolution registry.
  • Assist with the preparation of documentation for local companies’ Board and sub-committee meetings and assist with the preparation of Board minutes.
  • Assist in preparing the necessary documents for filings with the Corporate Affairs Commission and other relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Support other functional units, sharing best practices and learning from them to encourage alignment of the Group’s business objectives.
  • Proactively monitor government policy and proposed changes to the legislative and regulatory regime affecting the Group's business activities.
  • Responsible for the collection, maintenance and update of the team’s know-how resources and templates.
  • Carry out any other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned by the Head of Legal.
